Full Review
Rhino-Rack is an Australian company based in Sydney, and the Pioneer Platform is their flagship roof rack system for vans and 4WDs. It is the most specified van roof rack in Australia for good reason — the quality is genuine, the Australian warranty support is accessible, and the Pioneer system is designed around Australian load requirements and road conditions.
Platform vs Rail Rack
A platform (like the Pioneer) provides a full deck surface for carrying large items — Jerry cans, spare tyres, solar panels, camping gear, kayaks. A rail rack is lighter and better for aerodynamics but can only carry items that strap directly to the rails. For van lifers, the platform's versatility wins.
Roof Panel Solar Integration
The Pioneer Platform creates a raised mounting surface for solar panels that allows for air gap (panels run cooler, producing more power) and easy panel angle adjustment. Many van builders mount 400W of rigid panels on a Pioneer platform as the primary solar surface.
Load Rating
The Pioneer Platform is rated to 250kg static load and 100kg dynamic (vehicle moving) load. Sufficient for any reasonable combination of solar panels, storage boxes, recovery gear, and a spare tyre.
