⛺ Free camping

NSW has fewer free camping options than QLD or WA. Most free camping is on state forest land or crown land. Popular spots include Barrington Tops, Warrumbungle and the Snowy Mountains region. Check WikiCamps or Campermate for current spots.

📋 Registration

Vans converted to camper status must be inspected by a mechanic and registered as a motor vehicle. A "Campervan" classification requires compliant sleeping and cooking facilities. Contact Service NSW for current requirements.

🌙 Sleeping in your van

Sleeping in your van is legal in NSW on public roads unless signs prohibit it. City councils (especially Sydney) actively enforce no overnight parking in many suburbs. Byron Bay has become increasingly restrictive.

☀️ Solar performance

Sydney averages 4.8–5.5 peak sun hours. A 300–400W system is comfortable for year-round NSW touring.

🚐 Overview

NSW offers some of Australia's best van life touring, from the Pacific Highway and Byron Bay to Snowy Mountains and outback NSW. Weather is variable — coastal areas get rain year-round, while inland can be extreme.

🛣️ Roads

Pacific Highway coastal route is excellent. Inland routes like the Newell Highway are good for avoiding coastal traffic. Alpine Way (Kosciuszko) is stunning but check seasonal closures.
