⛺ Free camping
Excellent during the Dry season. Plenty of free roadside rest areas on the Stuart Highway. National parks require permits but are excellent. Outback rest areas are well-spaced.
📋 Registration
MVR (Motor Vehicle Registry) NT. Standard conversion requirements.
🌙 Sleeping in your van
Darwin is very van-friendly. Regional NT is welcoming but self-containment is strongly recommended — water and facilities can be 200km+ apart.
☀️ Solar performance
Darwin and Alice Springs are among the sunniest cities in Australia — 6.0+ peak sun hours year-round. Your solar system will perform exceptionally here.

🚐 Overview
The NT is the ultimate Australian road trip — Uluru, Kakadu, Kings Canyon, and the Red Centre. Two clear seasons: Wet (Oct–Apr, very hot, some roads close) and Dry (May–Sep, ideal touring).
🛣️ Roads
Stuart Highway is excellent. Lots of unsealed outback tracks — some require 4WD. Check road conditions after any Wet season rain.
