🏔️ Van Life in Tasmania
Everything you need to know about van life in Tasmania — free camping, registration, solar tips, and the best routes.
⛺ Free camping
Excellent. PWS Tasmania national parks are cheap and spectacular. Many scenic pulloffs allow overnight camping. The West Coast and South-West are incredibly remote.
📋 Registration
Transport Tasmania. Standard vehicle registration process for converted campervans.
🌙 Sleeping in your van
Very van-friendly across the state. Hobart has some parking restrictions but nothing like mainland capitals.
☀️ Solar performance
Tasmania averages only 3.8–4.5 peak sun hours — the lowest in Australia. Size your system generously: 400–600W solar and 200Ah+ battery for comfortable year-round touring.

🚐 Overview
Tassie is spectacular for van life but different to mainland — cold, wet winters, stunning national parks, and superb food and wine. Roads are slower and narrower.
🛣️ Roads
Mostly sealed but narrow and winding. The west coast roads are challenging. Allow much more time than the map suggests.
