⛺ Free camping

More limited than other states but improving. State forests (Pyrenees, East Gippsland) offer free camping. The High Country has excellent dispersed camping. Check Parks Victoria.

📋 Registration

VicRoads vehicle registration. Conversions require a Vehicle Identity Check and engineer's certificate for structural modifications.

🌙 Sleeping in your van

Melbourne is challenging — significant parking restrictions. Regional VIC is much more welcoming. High Country and East Gippsland particularly good.

☀️ Solar performance

Melbourne averages 4.4–5.0 peak sun hours — lowest of mainland capitals. Size up your solar system: 400W+ recommended for full-time VIC touring, especially in winter.

📍 Must-visit spots in Victoria

Great Ocean Road Wilsons Promontory Alpine National Park (summer) Grampians East Gippsland and Croajingolong

🚐 Overview

VIC punches above its weight for van life despite its size. The Great Ocean Road, Victorian Alps, and Gippsland offer spectacular touring. Winter can be cold and wet in alpine areas.

🛣️ Roads

Excellent sealed roads throughout. Great Ocean Road is stunning but narrow. Alpine roads close in winter — check VicRoads for seasonal closures.
