⛺ Free camping

Excellent free and low-cost camping. Many WA national parks are inexpensive. The Great Northern Highway has regular rest areas. Kimberley offers spectacular free camping but requires a capable vehicle.

📋 Registration

DOT WA registration for campervans. Conversion inspections required. DPAW (Parks and Wildlife) self-containment standards recommended for remote travel.

🌙 Sleeping in your van

Perth is reasonably van-friendly compared to eastern capitals. Regional WA is very welcoming. Always have self-containment for Kimberley and remote travel.

☀️ Solar performance

Perth is one of the sunniest cities in the world — 6.0+ peak sun hours. Kimberley in the Dry season is even better. A 200W system is adequate; 400W+ for heavy remote travel.

📍 Must-visit spots in Western Australia

Margaret River region Kimberley (El Questro, Purnululu) Esperance and the south coast Shark Bay and Monkey Mia Karijini National Park

🚐 Overview

WA is legendary for van life — the most remote and spectacular touring in Australia. The Margaret River region, Kimberley, and Pilbara are bucket-list destinations. Distances are vast.

🛣️ Roads

Most tourist routes are sealed and well-maintained. The Gibb River Road (Kimberley) is gravel and requires a capable 4WD. Great Ocean Drive near Esperance is stunning.
